journey from Delhi to Corbett offers you excellent views of
the almost flat, fertile and densely populates Ganga ? Yamuna
doab. One of the rich agricultural regions of North India
merges naturally into dense forests. Watch out, you are in
the tiger country! But then Corbett National Park is not just
a tiger country, it is also one of the best preserved parks
in India. The Corbett National Park is a delight. Trees, birds
and wild animals, walking around without fear? Nature is at
her best here!
How
to Reach
Air
Phoolbagh (Pantnagar) at a distance of 50 km is the nearest
domestic airport. Delhi at a distance of 300 km is the nearest
international airport.
Rail
Ramnagar 12 km away is the nearest railway station connected
to Lucknow and Kathgodam by train. From here you can board
bus to reach the park. For faster trains and connections to
other parts of India, change at Moradabad.
Road
Dhikala, the main entry to the park, is 300 km from Delhi,
145 km from Lucknow and 51 km from Ramnagar. The route from
Delhi spans Hapur-Murababad-Ramnagar. The route from Lucknow
spans Bareilly?Kichha?Rudrapur?Doraha?Kashipur. Ramnagar is
served by frequent buses to and from Nainital and Ranikhet,
112 km north. Buses arrive every half hour or so after the
eight hour trip from Delhi; Delhi Transport Corporation runs
a semi-deluxe service, and most of the alternatives are pretty
basic.
What
to see
Besides tigers, elephants are numerous and move around in
herds. There are four varieties of deer in the park, and spotted
and hog deer can be seen moving about near the river and in
the grasslands. Some common species spotted in park include
gaur, sambar, chital, wild dog, sloth bear, partridge, pheasant,
and jungle fowl. Some nocturnal cats found here are the leopard,
jungle cat and fishing cat. Sloth bear is found in the lower
regions of the park while the Himalayan black bear is seen
in the higher hills only. Some of the smaller residents of
the park are Himalayan palm civet, Indian gray mongoose, otter,
blacknaped hare and porcupine. With over 580 species of birds,
Corbett is also haven for bird watchers. In the Ramganga River
that flows through the park, one can spot the gharial (fish-eating
crocodile) and marsh crocodile.
Adventure
Freaks
The park is a heaven for those wish to seek adventure and
thrill. Trekking in the surrounding hills, birding excursions
to the Corbett and Nainital forests, and fishing excursions
in the Ramganga and Kosi rivers are excting options. River
rafting is a real attraction for those who wish to undulate
with the river. All leading resorts organise these activities,
along with necessary permissions.
